50 Years of Esa Automation & Robotics: key milestones

The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Esa Automation & Robotics, a major milestone for a company that began with the vision of four partners and has grown into an international presence in industrial automation and robotics. Esa Automation & Robotics: 50 Years of Innovation

1975 – Esa Automation & Robotics is founded by Mario Colombo along with three partners. The company begins by producing transistor radios and the first electronic antenna switchboards, meeting the growing demand for television systems. Between 1975 and 1980, it develops various technological solutions, including integrated systems with advanced axis control boards used to manage production and processing in industries such as wood, steel, and home appliances.

1985 – The company launches its first operator interface designed to integrate production systems. This marks a major step forward in industrial automation, introducing one of the first solutions in Italy that enables direct communication between machines and human operators. It sets the stage for the convergence of operational technology and information technology.

1991 – Esa Automation & Robotics develops a universal, multi-protocol, dual-port operator terminal. This interface, compatible with PLCs from multiple manufacturers, redefines the HMI landscape and strengthens the company’s role as an innovator in the field.

1994 – The company begins investing in the industrial PC market, expanding its automation and control offerings. This strategic choice allows it to better meet growing demands for efficiency, reliability, and integrated production processes.

From the late 1990s – Esa Automation & Robotics begins its international expansion. It opens branches in Spain in 1996, Germany in 1998, India in 2000, and China in 2006. These moves help build a global presence and extend the brand’s reach into key industrial markets.

2013 – The company launches Esaware, a complete product line developed to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0. The range includes advanced hardware and software solutions to optimize the control, management, and maintenance of production systems.

2015 – Esa Automation & Robotics enters the CNC and motion control market, developing high-precision technologies for machine tools. These solutions enhance production performance and support increasingly complex automation tasks.

2016 – The company begins producing brushless drives and motors, expanding its offering in the motion segment. By developing integrated mechatronic systems using proprietary technology, it delivers high-performance solutions tailored to the evolving needs of Industry 4.0.

2020 – The company establishes ESA Robotics, a division focused on designing advanced robotic solutions for machining and surface finishing. It also develops specialized robotics software and simulation tools to support custom applications.

2021 – Esa Automation & Robotics introduces the LUMIA product line, offering modular and customizable industrial monitors, PCs, and HMIs. Designed for high performance and advanced connectivity, LUMIA meets the needs of modern, digital production environments.
